We are each drawn to meditation for various reasons. My initial attraction to meditation was due to a tragic loss in my life which resulted in my going through a time of depression. A friend recommended I try meditation, as she had heard that meditation could help. Armed with a book that I’d found in the local book store, quiet music, and a few candles, I began my journey into meditation. Twenty-five years later, my personal practice is still evolving.
What no-one told me was that it would be easier to cultivate a meditation practice with a teacher. The first few years found my practice sporadic with no real focus or direction. Even so, I did begin to reap the benefits that sitting in silence can offer. It wasn’t until I met my first teacher 5 years later that my meditation practice began to evolve into a more structured and productive practice. After twenty-five years and under the guidance of a wonderful teacher, my meditation practice brings me great joy, comfort, and peace. The practice is not always easy or comfortable, but I always come away feeling more grounded and centered, which flows over into my daily life.
